EXPLOSION IN MINE
INJURIES TO DEPUTY
SEVERE BURNS ON BODY Shock and severe burns to the face, head, back, arms and legs were .suffered by Mr. Lewis Smithson, aged 45, a married man, of Runanga, in an explosion in Hunter and party’s cooperative coalmine. Mr. Smithson, who was carrying out the duties of examining deputy, was inspecting the mine prior to the men commencing work. Suddenly an explosion occurred, apparently caused by the presence of gas, for which Mr. Smithson 'was making the customary test with a lamp. His inquries were treated by a doctor of Runanga, and he was later admitted to the Grey Hospital. It will probably be several days before the full extent of bis injuries can be ascertained.
Despite his severe burns and the extinguishing of his lamp, Mr, Smithson made his way out to the mine mouth, where the miners were awaiting the result of his inspection.
