STATE STEEL WORKS
NO DECISION YET
MUST HE SURE OP GROUND
A reference to the proposed State iron and steel works at Onekaku was made at Collingwood recently by the Minister of Public Works, the Hon. R. Semple. He said that no decision would be made until the prospecting work had been completed. That would not be very long now. The Government wanted to make absolutely sure oi its ground. The estimates of iron ore on the field that had been made in past years were greatly exaggerated. Mr. Semple added that he was not throwing cold water on the scheme, bin the Government was determined to make absolutely sure it was not embarking in a wild-cat scheme. Pei - sonally he thought it would be .all right, but they wanted to know. That was the first thing to do. No business man would look at a business propostion unless he looked at the balance-sheet, and what they wanted to do at Onekaka was to look at Nature’s balance-sheet and to know exactly what Nature had provided.
