JUDGING OF SHEEP

RING METHOD FAVOURED REPENNING PAT WINNERS MORE SHEARING ENTRIES Undertaking the judging of sheep in the ring for the first time, the Poverty Bay A. and P. Association was gratified' with the success achieved. Ring judging was done only in the case of the Romneys, and the judge, Mr. F. G. Jackson, Featherston, was pleased that this method had been made available.

“The method of having the sheep brought into a ring, as you did, was an excellent one,” Mr. Jackson wrote to the association, the committee of which met during the week. “It gave me a much better chance of seeing the sheep to their best advantage. I could get a better look at them, and it is a much quicker way of getting through the work when there are big classes.

“If I may make a suggestion, it would be an advantage to have the ring a bit bigger, say, 20ft. or 25ft. across. A round yard is much better than a square one, .as there are no corners for the sheep to jam into.” Mr. Frank H. Mardon, Wairoa, wrote suggesting that when the results of the fat iamb classes had been given, the placed pens should be taken to the head of the particular section in order of merit, the pens vacated by the prize-winners being taken by those turned out of their pens to make a place for the winners. Mr. E. H. Morice, Ruatorla, suggested that larger numbers of shearers should be induced to attend the Show shearing competition. He promised to see What he could do towards securing a contingent from the Coast next year. The system of judging worked by Mr. C. Mossman was excellent, but Mr. Morice suggested that in the young farmers’ section more points might be allowed for general efficiency and cleanliness, for competitors should aim at efficiency, rather than speed.
