Tikiwhata Tunnel

Sir,-—(Mr. Semple told us that this tunnel will be completed in two years’ time. There being 114 A chains to finish according to your report of November 10, this means that excavation must proceed at a rate of about five chains a month. The rate of tunnelling between June 24 and November 10 averaged just over two chains a month, and Mr. Semple stated that the engineers and men could not do much more than they were doing and that there was not much chance of speeding up this work. It is hard to reconcile this statement with the estimated time of completion, as progress would need to be more than doubled to get the tunnel through by November, 1940. FANGSCREW.
