The Governor-General, Viscount Galway, and Viscountess Galway, accompanied by Captain R. Stuart French, aide-de-camp, made a trip on the Wanganui River from Retaruke to Pipiriki on Thursday. They later proceeded to the Chateau, National Park. The Vice-Regal party, after spending a day fishing at Western Bay, will proceed to Taupo.

At a recent meeting of the directors, Mr. J. iHifcbert was appointed general manager of Messrs. Collin, Ltd. Mr. E. A. Perry left Wairoa yesterday for Wellington, where he will take up an appointment with the national broadcasting service. He was accompanied by Mrs. Perry and their small son.—Special.

Mr. J. Graham, a retired director of the Ulster Bank, Ireland, and Mr. J. A. Thompson, a retired branch manager, arrived at Auckland by the Akaroa from Southampton, for a short holiday visit to New Zealand.

Mr. H. A. Brown, a retired Indian civil servant and formerly a Judge of the High Court at Rangoon, Burma, arrived at Auckland by the Akaroa frem Southampton, to spend two months in New Zealand. A farewell to Archdeacon H. A. Hawkins, who is leaving the liowick charge to undertake a more extensive interest in Maori mission work, was held in the Howick Town Hall, Auckland. Mr. T. M. Barton, son and Mr. and Mrs. W. M. Barton, Auckland, who went to England 18 months ago, has received an appointment under the Audit Department of the Colonial Office and has been posted to Nigeria as assistant-auditor.

The Rev. Keith Hadfield, eldest son of Mr. C. A. Hadfield, Renwiek, left this week for Ross, where he is to assist the Rev. Lunan Dewar in South Westland. The intention is that Mr. Hadfield will soon take over from Mr. Dewar, thus relieving him for work further afield in the parish, to extend some 120 miles south of Waiho. Three ratings selected to make up the complement of rf.M.S. Achilles, which left Auckland yesterday for England, include F. N. Jeffries, R. A. Robson, and L. F. Luxton. The lastmentioned is a of Captain and Mrs. Charles West, of Gisborne. The lads, who are members of the Canterbury division of the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve, will undergo a period of extended sea training and will be offered an opportunity of service under actual seagoing contions on a man of war. They will pro, ceed to England via Suva, Tahiti, the Panama Canal, and the West Indies, and after refitting will link up with the Mediterranean Fleet, returning to New Zealand via the Suez Canal, Aden, and Colombo about June 2. The New Zealand youths will be granted leave in England.
