RAILWAYS IN ENGLAND

ROAD SERVICE MENACE POLITICAL ISSUE SOON LONDON, Nov. 11. , English railways are facing a grave crisis, says the Sunday Express. The receipts of the four groups last week showed a decrease of £250,000, compared with the same week in 1937, which itself I was a bad week. The average weekly drop this year, compared with 1937, is £112,000. The railways are expected to earn only £30,000,000 this year. The standard annual revenue is £51,000,000. The reasons given for the slump arc:—

Loss of long-distance traffic to motor transport. Cutting of traffic rates as the result of road competition.

Bad trade, higher wages and higher costs of materials.

The Sunday Express adds that the railways' troubles will soon become a first-rate political issue.
