HERD SIRE SURVEY
GISBORNE CONDITIONS VISIT BY SUPERVISOR A collection of data on herd sire survey work is being made by Mr. C. M. Hume, Dominion supervisor for herd testing, who paid a visit to Gisborne during the week-end. Mr. Hume had an engagement in Whakatane at the end of last week, and came on to Gisborne on Saturday. He had arranged to leave to-day lor Wellington. Mr. Hume has been spending some time recently in herd sire survey work, which is being undertaken by the herd recording department of the New Zealand Dairy Board. In the opinion of the board, a Domkiionwide survey of sires is urgently needed to clearly define the present trend in herd building, and that such a survey is likely to disclose any inherent weaknesses in the present methods. The investigation being made is based on herd testing data, and figures for those herds which have been under test from year to year will prove invaluable in the investigation. While he was in Gisborne, Mr. Hume took the opportunity of visiting a number of farms in an endeavour to collect further data on the subject. Speaking v'ith the writer to-day, he said that certain opinions had been formed, but all the necessary data had not been compiled yet. and until that was done no official intimation 'could be given in regard to the findings. Mr. Hume also investigated mastitis testing work in the district.
