NEW AMATEUR CHAMPION A GOLFING FAMILY The new amateur golf champion. P. G. F. Smith, was born on November 11, 1918, at Dunedin, close to the Balmacewen course. As he came of a golfing family it was natural that he would be associated with the game at an early age, but it was not untu four years, ago that h*> became a member of his first club, Akacana. Smith has won his club championship three times and the Auckland champion of champions title once, being twice beaten in the play-off, but his first major success did not come until last Easter, when he defeated J. P. Hornabrook in the final of the North Island championship at Palmerston North. An uncle, H. C. Smith, won the New Zealand amateur championship in 1908, and his father, B. J. Smith, sen., was" successful in the Otago provincial championship three times and the Ofago Club championship live timos.
