AMERICA SPEEDING UP

DEFENCE PROGRAMME WARSHIP BUILDING VOTE (Reed. Oct, 12, «J a.m.) WASHINGTON. Oct. 11. President Roosevelt has announced the speeding up, instead of retarding, of the national defence programme, necessitating an increase of £300,000,000 on next year's naval budget in order to carry on warship construction. This brings the 1939 naval appropriation to the peacetime record of over £140,000,000.
