MOBILISATION PLAN
INDUSTRY IN WARTIME BRITISH SCHEME WANTED (British Official Wireless.) Reed. 9 a.m. RUGBY, Oct. 11. At a conference of the National Chamber of Trade at Clacton, attention was directed to the question of the mobilisation of industry and other essential services. The assurance of the Prime Minister, Mr. Neville Chamberlain, of a prompt inquiry into the position of preparedness in peace against an emergency, was welcomed. The president, in his address, said that an emergency drew a ready response to the call of duty, but willingness to serve must be linked with workable plans. He anticipated Mr. Chamberlain's consultation with the representatives of delegations able to place before him a practical view as the outcome of direct knowledge of the resources of those activities and the services represented by them. He urged the preservation of private enterprise. The directors of the Manchester Chamber of Commerce to-day passed a resolution urging the early introduction of a scheme to organise now in time of peace work atid a national service for every able-bodied citizen so as to achieve me maximum of national effort in time of war. It was funner maintained in the resolution that the country could heartily endorse an appropriate scheme -f national service, or registration and the Government was asked to give an immediate lead on these lines.
