Letters Intended for publication should be brief and confined to subjects of general public interest. The name • and address of correspondents should be enclosed, not necessarily for publication, but as evidence of good faith. Oattle Breeds Sir,—Mr. L. A. P. Sherriff, in his letter of, October U, is undoubtedly right when he says that from the butcher's .point of view the. Aberdeen Angus is superior to any other breed of cattle. The Christmas fat stock shows 01 last year at York, Edinburgh and Smithfield were all won by Angus cattle. Incidentally, Mr. J. J. Cridlan recorded his tenth win at Smithfield with his Pride of Maisemue, while of the 14 awards open to all breeds 11 were won by pure bred Aberdeen Angus. In tne last 20 years at the fat stock shows of Chicago and Smithfield, the two of most importance, Angus cattle have won threequarters of the championships. For those interested in something more practical, let me,add.that trie beef from Aberdeen fetches :a far price inan any other on the Smithfield market. Some of the nnyus cattle that I have seen in Poverty Bay are, however, disappointing. I quite realise that cattle in New Zealand are primarily for work, but surely, when you are going to sell your machine after use, it is best to sell one of good quality. It seems that except for three or four breeders the idea is to produce something that ig big and tall, rather than small and compact. • I was amazed to hear auctioneers proclaim it if a bull was big in the bone. I have heard it said that a' black coat hides many faults, but it must be remembered that the butcher sees the faults and not the coat. It would be a pity to allow the beef to spoil the very high reputation, that any produce from New Zealand has, in the eves of the British public—Yours, etc., J. KEITH KILLBY.
