"Artistic Proteges"
A VOGUE for artistic proteges seems to have been substituted by some of Hollywood's leading stars for adoptions which threatened for a time to overrun the film colony with children still in the cradle. Not that the stars have lost their interest in infants; many of them still are adopting youngsters from orphan homes, but the adoptions are fewer as the "market" apparently is overloaded. The trend now is to find some youngster with talent and help him get started in artistic fields.
The latest of the prodigy sponsors is Bing Crosby, who was discovered to have taken his first singing pupil. Crosby acquired his sudden interest in teaching after listening to _ Donald O'Connor who is cast as his "kid" brother in "Sing You Sinners." At the same time it was learned that John McCormack. the famous Irish tenor, is coaching Olympe Bradna and is developing her voice so well that she easily sings coloratura arias.
Grace Moore, before she left Hollywood, spent many hours working with Jean Ellis, a youngster in her 'teens whose career ,'is being sponsored by Miss Moore. The girl has a natural lyric soprano voice, Miss Moore said, which needs only training to make her the equal of many outstanding singers.
