TOURIST TRAFFIC
GISBORNE DISTRICT EXCELLENT PROSPECTS MR. L. J. SCHMITT'S VISIT The opinion that there were excellent prospects for developing the tourist traffic to the Gisborne district was expressed by Mr. L. J. Schmitt, general manager for the Department of Tourist' and Health Resorts and Publicity, in a discussion yesterday with representatives of the Gisborne Chamber of Commerce. Gisborne Thirty-Thousand Club and the Waikanae Park Development Committee.
Mr. Schmitt paid a brief visit to Gisborne in the course of a tour of East Coast districts. The visitor declared that in the near future Gisborne could expect to have not only hundreds, but thousands of tourists from the north.
He agreed to find the cost of taking a photograph of Young Nick's Head from out at sea lor publicity purposes in connection with the centenary. Mr. Schmitt discussed also various points of interest in the district from the tourist aspect. He considered that Waikaremoana was of great importance to Gisborne and that the organisations interested should make strong representations for the construction of the shorter route via Hangaroa.
An announcement of considerable interest was that matters were in train for„ the formation of a special tourist district embracing Auckland Rotorua, Waikaremoana, Gisborne, the East Coast, Opotiki and Tauranga.
Mr. Schmitt spent Monday night at Te Puia and he told a deputation which met him there that he was much impressed with the possibilities of a tourist centre at Te Puia.
