Depression Years
Sir, —Having listened with interest to Mr. Toogood may I be permitted to join issue with him in nis remarks with reference to the period 1931-35 and the people's savings. Nobody
'blames the previous Government for the depression, tout owing to the policy it adopted wnen the slump arrived those people who had a few pounds saved were forced to spend every penny to enable them to provide for their family and. keep a roof over tneir heads. When their funds were depleted the only alternative offerso. was tne dole, slave camps, soup kitchens, or charitable aid, and it was not until the Labour Government wa* voied into office that work was obtainable, self-respect regained, ana suitable food and clothing was able to toe purchased once more out o< earnings. To a vast 'bulk of the people 1931-35 must always remain a very bitter memory, in spite of Mr. Toogood's' economics. CHARLES WEST.
