PACKED ORMOND MEETING

MR HULTQUIST "S CAMPAIGN IWPER .MILLS QUESTION The Ormond Hall was packed last night to hear an address by Mr. A. G. Hultquist, M.P., Labour candidate for the Bay of Plenty seal in the elections.

From the outset the audience lemonstrated its enthusiastic support for the member and the Government ■ind when Mr. Hultquist entered the iiall he was given n rousing recepion. Mr. .1. Macrae presided, and Mr. Hultquist spoke for two hours, hi.iddrcss being punctuated with applause to such an extent that he had to appeal to the audience to refrain from giving him that type o •neouragemont so that he could tell his story uninterrupted. At the conclusion of his address a lumber of questions were asked relating to defence, the recent action of :hc Whakalane Paper Mills management in dismissing a number of men. md the surplus in the dairy account. Mr. Hultquist's replies were to the

satisfaction of the audience, judging by their applause. With reference to the Whakalane Paper Mills Mr. Hultquist read a letter, dated October 5, which he had received from Mr. 11. A. Horrocks, managing director, Mr. Horrocks -:iating that he had now received an assurance from the Minister o! Finance to the effect that it was not the intention of the Government at any time to take over the papermaking industry. Mr. Horrocks further stated that he was completely satisfied with the Minister's reply, and the company had decided to retain 85 ol the men employed at the works, also expressing the appreciation o< ilie company to Mi-. Hultquist lor the way in which he had given assistance to the company from time to time. At the conclusion of the meeting a vote of thanks and confidence in the candidate was carried with only four or five dissenticnl voices, and before the audience dispersed three cheer: were given for the Prime Minister, the Rt. Hon. M. J. Savage, the Government and the candidate.
