A message from Shanghai states tnat tlie Japanese occupation of Wulitien completes the encirclement of Sinyang. Each side lost thousands killed in the Chinese efforts to recapture the Liulin and Tungshanghao railway stations. The Japanese bombed Canton, killing 20 persons and wounding 75. The Hongkong correspondent of the Daily Telegraph says that the Japanese penetrated the Tapieh Pass, leading directly to the Chinese headquarters at Macheng, 20 miles away, the capture of which opens up an excellent highway to Hankow. A Hankow message states that the Japanese have occupied Tehan. The Tokio correspondent of The Times says it is officially announced by the Japanese that the number of Chinese killed on various fronts during the period from August. 20 to October 3 totals 68,737.
