CRICKET COMPETITIONS
POVERTY BAY SERIES OPENING DATE DECIDED HAWKE UUP CHALLENGE Eighteen nominations have been received from cricket clubs in Gisborne for the three competition grades of the Poverty Bay Cricket Association and they were accepted provisionally last evening at the meeting of the management committee of the association. There were present Messrs. J. deV. Blathwayt, chairman, G. A. Rcvell, W. J. Wilkie, R. H. Cooke, G. N. Lockett, P. 11. Dow, W. Stewart, and the secretary, Mr. D. A. Wells. Apologies for absence were received from Messrs. A. Bignall and J. Craw-L'ord-Smith. The nominations were received as follows, the matter of eliminating the bye in the senior B and junior grade to be discussed at the next meeting:— Senior A Grade.—City, G.H.5.0.8., Marist, and Old Boys. Senior B Grade.—Marist, G.H.5.0.8. White and Blue, City, Rugby Old Boys, Gisborne Club, Civil Service, and two’ High School teams. Junior Grade.—Marist, Rugby Old Boys, two High School teams, and probably one from the primary schools. The appointment of delegates to represent the association at the annual meeting of the New Zealand council was deferred until next week. A letter was received from the New Zealand council that four challenges had been received already for the Hawke Cup and stating the possibility of arranging a fifth challenge. It was decided to enter a challenge, the Poverty Bay association preferring dates towards the end of February. Practice Night Appointments It was resqlved to await the start of the competitions before deciding to send a junior team to take part in the cricket week during Christmas and New Year to be organised in Hastings by the Hastings sub-associa-tion. The official opening of the season in Gisborne will take place at 3 p.m. on Saturday, October 22. Practice night appointments have been made as follows: — Monday.—No practice. Tuesday.—Marist, Old Boys-Gis-borne Club, and City. Wednesday.—G.H.S.O.B. Blue and White, and Civil Service. Thursday.—G.H.S.O.B. senior A, City, and Rugby Old Boys. Friday.—Old Boys-Gisborne Club, Marist, and one wicket free. Practice will start on Tuesday next and on Saturday players arc to attend a working-bee at the Oval at 2 p.m. to' assist in the erecting of the nets.
The question of the playing of one or two-day games in the various grades and also the starting and finishing times for the matches was discussed, but the decisions of the committee were held over to the next meeting.
