Wedding Bells
Wairoa Wedding- *' Cooper—Sedcole I St, Peter's Church, Wairoa, was the scene of a pretty wedding Jast Wednesday, when Mary Vaughan, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. D. P. Sedcole, Wairoa, was.married to Eric James Cooper, of Te Puke. The Rev. Father Doherty officiated, and Mrs. IM. Stairmand was the organist. Escorted by her father and wearing a graceful frock, a Canadian model ot White silk net, the bride presentee! a charming picture as she entered the church. The bodice was cut on lilting lines and from the hips extended tiny silk lace frills to the hern and forming a ti;ain. Her veil of white tulle beautifully embroidered was held in place with a coronet of orange blossom. A lovely bouquet of white toses, white hyacinths and fern completed her ensemble. :, The bridesmaid, Miss Enid Ebbitt. niece of the bride, wore pink shower sprayed'silk organdie and a charming Juliet cap of pink flowers. Pink shoes r,nd host to tone and a lovely bouquet of pinkjcyclamen roses and l'crn completed her ensemble. 'The flower girl, Judith Osmond, also niece of the bride, wore blue showered silk organdie, blue Juliet cap, and a bouquet of blue and pink cineraria, and fern.
Mr. James Rachingcr, Wairoa, capably carried out the duties of best man. After the ceremony a very enjoyable reception was held at Osier’s tea rooms, where a beautiful wedding cake held pride of place. Mrs. D. P. Sedcole, mother of the bride, looked smart in a navy ensemble, with hat and shoes to tone. Mrs. I. Osmond, sister of the bride, chose a navy and white model frock, while Mrs. W. Ebbitt, another sister of the bride, wore a navy costume. The bride and bridegroom left later on a three weeks’ tour of the North island, the former wearing a brown floral frock, over which was worn a brown fur coat and hat, shoes and bag to tone.
Turanga Croquet Club Opening Day With the Hag 'fluttering gaily in the breeze over the pretty lawns, with their beautiful surroundings, the Turanga Croquet Club opened its 1938-39 season on Saturday afternoon under ideal conditions. Mrs. F. E. Ormiston, the president, • welcomed the members and visitors, ; numbering over 100, and in a happy ; little speech expressed her pleasure at t seeing so many present. She thanked - Mr. R Mitchell for the gift of a rose bowl for competition among the B ) grade players at the Cox Cup tournaI ment, now an annual fixture, i Last season the club won the Hutchi- , son Cup, which was given for A grade singles, open to all-comers.
Mrs. A. ,). Barnard presented the president with a beautiful bouquet done in the club colours of red and blue with spraxias and bluebells. Mrs. Ormiston called on the Deputy-Mayor, Mr. J. It. Hall, to speak. After apologising for tlie absence of Ibq Mayor, Mr. D. W. Coleman, M.P., he wished the club a successful and happy season, and congratulated Mr. Parkin, the caretaker, on the excellent condition of the lawns, Mrs. Hall played the first ball through the hoop, and the courts were declared open. Mrs. F. E. Ormiston then made a presentation of a bouquet of blue and red flowers to Mrs. Hall, who suitably responded. Mrs. Derbyshire, president of the Poverty Bay Croquet Club Centre, after congratulating the club on its excellent courts, extended an invitation from the Hastings club to be present al the Hawke's Bay Association's opening day next week. M is. Henderson, president of the Gisborne club, and Mrs. Somervell, president of the Poverty Bay Croquet Club, conveyed good wishes for the coming season. Under the capable supervision of 'Mrs, MoncriefT, assisted by Mrs. 11. F. Forster, and a group of willing workers, afternoon tea was served informally under the shade of the trees. , The tea table was prettily decorated with a bowl of blue and red flowers, arranged by Mrs. Ormiston. The attractive pavilion decorations, . carried out in rod and blue, were arranged by Mrs. A. J, Barnard, assist-
ed by Mrs. M. Barry and others. After tea lawn competitions were indulged in, the following successful ladies being each presented with a prize:—Clock Golf. —Mrs. Parkinson. Four Ball Break. —Mesdamcs Falconer, Angcll and Derbyshire. Hitting the Peg.—Mrs. Bayliss. Golf Croquet.— Mrs. Lightfoot. Prizes for the various competitions were donated by Mesdamcs J. S.
