TRAFFIC INTERRUPTED
SLIPS IN WAIRARAPA HEAVY RAIN REPORTED ' (Por Press Association.) MASTERTON, this day. Very heavy rain has been experienced in the Te Wharau district during the past two days, when Gin. were registered. For 24 hours ended at 9 o’clock this morning, 3.60 in. were recorded.
Some roads were blocked yesterday, but later were reopened for traflic. However, the rain set in again heavily last night, bringing down further slips and blocking the Maungaraki and Tyneside roads. The mail car was not able to get through to-day.
TRAINS HELD UP
RIVER EN C ROACHMENT Trains are held up on the Waiiarapa 'and Upper Ilutt line by the encroachment of the Ilutt River, north of the shingle recovery plant at Melling. Passengers are being transferred by bus. It is not known how long the hold-up will continue, but it is expected to be overcome by this afternoon. Slips on the Wellington-Woodville line yesterday delayed trains. A mixed train from Masterton to Woodvillc was held up till 10.40 p.m., and t.hc 3.30 railcar from Wellington, via Wairarapa, to Palmerston North, was stopped at Masterton till the line was clear, the passengers being taken on by bus.
A boulder which fell in the Manawatu Gorge last night delayed rail traffic for 40 minutes.
