CATTLE FEED SHORTAGE HAY, BRAN AND POLLARD DEMAND FROM DAIRYMEN An acute shortage of supplementary cattle feed exists in the Gisborne district, due mainly to the destruction of pastures during the extensive wet spell and the slow spring growth of grass following the return of fine weather. Milk supply men have been particularly concerned, because at times of feed shortage they depend on bran and pollard to maintain their production. The shortage of bran is Dominion wide, and it is reported that stocks in Gisborne have never been so low. All steps are being taken to relieve the position, and advice has been received that a shipment left Lyttleten to-day by the m.v. Pakura, which is expected to discharge here on Tuesday. This shipment should meet all immediate requirements. Gisborne merchants quote existing supplies at 13s Gd per 1801 b sack.

Pollard is very difficult to secure, and merchants’ supplies are priced at 17s Gd per 2001 b sack. The hay shortage has not been relieved since the winter, and lucerne hay -is still quoted at 4s to 4s Gd per bale, with good meadow hay at 3s Gd to 4s a bale.
