SEEPAGE OF OIL

NEW PLYMOUTH Til OF OLE

Gas fumes and oil seepage are causing difficulties in obtaining stones and gravel from the beach near the New Plymouth breakwater. The foreman, Mr. J. E. Hawes, reported to the Harbour Board that frequently stones were so covered with oil that they were useless for making concrete blocks for the breakwater extension. Petroleum gas fumes were also a trouble. On calm days bubbles of oil could sometimes be seen on the surface of the water near the wharves.
