DOMINION POTATOES
EXPORTS TO AUSTRALIA PERMIT POSSIBLE SOON LIFTING OF EMBARGO? (Per Press Association.) ASHBURTON, this day. Advices from Sydney are to the effect that it is believed that authority will be given for the importation of New Zealand potatoes under license and finality will be reached in 48 hours. Growers have withdrawn their offers awaiting the result, for prices will rise 10s to £1 as soon as Sydney buys supplies. The North Island is taking a keener interest in the market, fearing a rise if exports are permitted. It is expected that the exportation of potatoes to Australia will affect the New Zealand market seriously, a Gisborne merchant stated to-day. Distributors have realised for some time past that the market had reached the lowest possible level, and their cautious buying has given a firming tendency to the business. Moreover, it has been conveyed to the Canter' bury growers that shipments overseas would be arranged by the Government, in order to relieve the New Zealand market, even if the Australian negotiations fail this season. An increase of from 10s to £1 a ton in the f.o.b. price of Canterbury potatoes v was considered to be a logical result of the lifting of the Australian embargo.
