MAORI FINED £ls OFFENCE IN STATE FOREST "There is no excuse for any Maori not knowing that he cannot shoot native pigeons," said Mr. G. N. Morris, SMi. in the Whangarei Police Court when a Maori, Jack Edwards, was charged with kilLing 15 pigeons in a State forest. Mr. H. K. Trimmer. for accused, who pleaded guilty, said that Edwards thought that 'he could shoot pigeons under the Treaty of Waitangi. His ancestors had killed pigeons in the same forest and he thought that he could do so. For shooting in a State forest Edwards was convicted and ordered to pay costs, 10s.
"I have been imposing a fine of £7 10s for one pigeon," said Mr. Morris. "This man shot 15. I will 'have to make the fine £ls and costs, but will allow time to pay. In connection with the Treaty of Waitangi and any rights that the Maoris think they may have under this treaty, if they want to bring the question to a head then they should bring i\ lest, case before a higher court."
