HUNT CLUB'S RACES

FIELDS REVIEWED

HEAVY TRACK AGAIN MUDLARKS FAVOURED SINGLE POOL BETTING By "Trenton" The Poverty Bay Hunt Club will hold its twenty-first annual meeting at Makaraka on Saturday. The first race will start at noon and not 12.30 p.m. as previously announced. Single pool betting will be in operation. The fields have filled well and, providing the weather is fine on Saturday, everything points to a successful meeting. However, the track is certain to be very heavy, and mudlarks, together with the lighter-weighted division, appear to hold the upper hand. There are a number of newcomers to the fields that contested the races at the Turf Club fixture last week, but that should not seriously trouble backers as the new horses do not represent top-class. •The following review may be of assistance to backers in arriving at a final selection. 12.0: AWAPUNI HURDLES Royal Mimic, 11.5: Bled badly in the steeples last Friday and was given away by owner: has since been working on track and will probably start. Providing going is not too heavy, he would have a chance. Good Hunting, 10.12: Won steeples last Friday and is a capable hurdler. Good prospects. Professional, 10.7: Failed badly at this distance on Friday but won comfortably on Saturday with a quarter of a mile extra to cover. If he reproduces his second day form he should have prospects. Air Commodore, 9.9: Finished on into second place each day last week and, providing he is kept nearer to the leaders, he should prove difficult to beat. He meets Professional on 131 b better terms. Bothweli, 9.0: Is not a proficient jumper, and may find the conditions against one of his calibre. If Royal Mimic has taken no harm from his accident last week he should go well, but backers are likely to place their faith in Air Commodore and Good Hunting.

12.40: WHATATUTU HACK FLAT

Ruinettc, 9.3: Ran a good race for ! second on the opening day of the Turf Club meeting on Friday. Flying- Comedy, 9.2: Second on Friday and won Hack Cup on Saturday. Now has 61b. more to carry but should be prominent. Gay Mimic, 8.12: Failed to handle the heavy going last week but has previously won on a soft track. Hinepit, 8.11: Has 51b. more to carry than when she won on Saturday at 1 six furlongs. She is a fit mare and should be placed. Gaiwind, 8.9: Won on opening day over this distance but failed in the Hack Cup on the second day. She may have been feeling the effects of the first day and has had lime I to freshen up. Quaint, 8.7: Ran a real good race for third on Friday in the Hack Flat and should not be troubled by the extra distance. Pokiha, 8.2: Has Gvlb less to carry Red Glory, 8.0: No form. Cup on Saturday. Reay Bridge, 8.0: Failed to handle the going last week. Defora, 8.0: Will have to improve a lot on recent showings. Royal Stuart, 8.0: Finished on each day last week and should be improved. Ruinette claims another engagement in the next race, but if started here would be dangerous. Quaint and Pokiha are capable of surprising, but the form selections are Flying Comedy, Gaiwind and Hinepit. 1.20: HEXTON HANDICAP Small Boy, 8.10: Has been well treated in the weights, but the going may prove too much for him. Gay Hunter, 8.9: Ran a good race on Saturday. Peter Beckford, 8.5: Did not start at the meeting last week. Hunting Mars, 8.5: Won over seven furlongs on Friday in effortless style. A lit horse and should see out the distance. Ruinette, 7.8: Will be bracketed with Hunting Mars and if reserved they should prove a formidable pair. Pennycomequick, 7.13: Ran poorly on opening day and was last at this distance on Saturday. The manner in which Brown Lap carried the field along may not have suited Her but she will have to improve the proverbial ton. Legatee, 7.13: Did not impress last Friday. Minnow, 7.6: Ran a great race for second behind Brown Lap on Saturday. Should take considerable beating. Skyway, 7.2: Was finishing like a train on Friday until Ruinette cannoned into him in the straight. Has good prospects. The heavy track conditions are likely to favour the lightweights, but Hunting Mars is such a brilliant performer in the mud that the bracket may be first choice, with support for Minnow and Skyway. 2.5: STEEPLECHASE HANDICAP Kahunoke, 13.5: A good horse but this weight will go very close to anchoring him. Lucky Dick, 10.7: Will be bracketed with Kahunoke. He was going well until he was thrown out of his stride by Good Hunting falling lasl Saturday, but still has u lot to learn. Rapa Walata, 11.9: Has 2Glb more ':> carry than when he won lasl Saturday. Mahala, 10.13: Has Hill) more to carry than when she was second and will now meet Rapa Waiala on Gib better terms. She appeared to be holding Rapa Waiala safely when she fell on landing four furlongs from home. New Perry, 10.7: Has no form. Gisborne Jack, 10.7: Has no form.

The issue appears to lie between Mahala and Rapa Waiala. 2.45: SWAARTIIMOOK MAIDEN Tu Rahiri, 8.0: Ran a fair race each day Inst week. Fourth on Saturday in Trial. Whetu, 8.0: Did not show Up last week. Fairy Hill, 8.(1: A newcomer, bill has no public form. Defray, 8.0: May go better on Saturday than lasl week as he was lame then. Kitchenette, 8.0: Will be suited by the distance. Cool Smoke, 8.0: Did not go well last Friday. Sweet Pal, 8.0: Has not raced for a long time. Sunny Lass, 8.0: Disappointed last week but is capable of a better effort. Defora, 8.0: Is engaged in Whatatutu Hack Flat. Mimicry, 8.0: Second in the Trial on Saturday. Native Song, 8.0: Second in the Maiden on opening day. Aeclla, S.O: Third in Trial on Saturday. Samogan, 8.0: No form. Red Glory, 8.0: No form. Taking a line through the form dis-

played last week, the favourite division may comprise Native Song, Mimicry and Tu Rahiri. 3.25: HUNTERS' BRACELET Wolsey, 10.12: A fit horse and has a fair turn of speed. Illinois, 10.12: A big mare and should carry the weight. Won the Trial in good style last Saturday. Hessketoon, 10.12: Failed at the Turf Club meeting but should be better suited here. King Silver, 10.9: Appears to be 100 close to Illinois in the weights. Birkology, 10.7: Has been galloping well and is fit. Royal Toast, 10.7: Failed at last two starts. The final choice may be between Illinois and Hessketoon. 4.10: RAPANUI HACK HANDICAP Gay Mimic, 8.13: In second race. Red Hunting, 8.10: Won on opening day in hollow fashion. Should be hard to beat., Hinepit, 8.10: In second race. Professional, 8.10: A fit horse. Skyway, 8.7: In Hexton Handicap, Okawa, 8.7: Third on Saturday and should be improved. Jayola, 8.5: Won at last start at Malamata and has been working nicely. Bold Step, 8.2: Failed in heavy going last week but is a very lit horse. Perfect Lady, 8.2: Ran a good second to Hinepit on Saturday and should go well. Pokiha, 8.2: In second race. Ballyculanc, 8.0: Will need to improve. Syncopate, 8.0: Has a fair amount ol pace. Royal Stuart, 8.0: In second race. Opera Star, 8.0: Has pace but will need to improve on recent showings. This race is difficult to sum up as many horses claim prior engagements. Earlier form may influence backers to some extent, but at present it looks like Red Hunting, Okawa, Hinepit and Perfect Lady having a say in the finish.
