WAR ON RELIGION
CAMPAIGN IN RUSSIA PARIS, July 21. The war against religion continues unabated in Russia. The latest important moves are reported to include a new campaign against the remnants of the Orthodox Church. During the past year many of the highest church leaders have been arrested, usually on charges of being dignitaries, Fascist agents, or counterrevolutionary plotters. Despite the new drives against the churches, and the closing of some churches, including the last Cathedral, the “Old” Orthodox Church in Moscow, a survey of the effects of the 20 years’ anti-religious campaign reveals that considerable numbers of people, many of them young, are still crowding small churches, even braving snow and sleet. Most of them are men. It is estimated that at the time of the revolution there were between 400 and 500 churches in Moscow alone. There are now less than 30.
