GERMANS DIG IN

FORTIFICATIONS IN WEST UNEASINESS IN FRANCE LONDON, July 14. It is learned that Germany is intensifying her fortifications in the Rhineland, and this action involves, the diversion of labour which has hitherto been employed on the great strategic motor roads. . In addition to these workers, the Government is taking 100,000 men from labour camps. Such is the pace at which these labour battalions are now working that the defence plan will be completed by the middle of August. This is only one stage of formidable plans, consisting mainly of inter-con-necting and deepening the fortifications. Similar work is being undertaken on the German-Belgian arid GermanDutch frontiers. These developments are causing uneasiness in France, whose immobility will be increased in relation to Central Europe in general and to Czechoslovakia in particular.
