COAST GUARDS’ UNITS
SERVICE IN EMERGENCY .MARINE DISASTERS AUCKLAND MOVEMENT (Per Press Association.) AUCKLAND, this clay. Having as its main purpose the saving oi lives in shipwrecks and other marine disasters oil' the Dominion coast, a New Zealand Coast Guards Auckland Division, an entirely voluntary organisation, has been formed in the city. It is hoped at an early date to form similar divisions at other chief ports of the Dominion. Foundation members of fhe coast guards are ex-members of the Auckland Sea Scouts Association, a body with similar aims which has been disbanded. Membership of the coast guards will be limited, and so that only the most suitable young men will be brought into the movement, aspirants for membership will have to receive the nomination of two members and will have to undergo a probationary period of three months. The rocket apparatus in the keeping of the Auckland Harbour Board has been placed at the coast guards’ disposal, and the board has also signified its general support of the organisation The coast guards will receive instruction in the use of this apparatus, and training will also be given in such subjects as seamanship, coastal navigation. signalling and first aid, so that the men may bo qualified to meet any emergency that may arise.
