ANSWER TO THE POPE
IL DUCE'S DECLARATION
SUGGESTION "ABSURD"
ROME, July 31
Addressing young Fascists at Forli yesterday, Signor Mussolini replied to the condemnation by the Pope on Friday of racial and nationalistic doctrines, and declared that the Government of Italy intended to carry out its racial programme. The statement by the Pope suggesting that Fascism was imitating someone or something was simply absurd, said Signor Mussolini.
A message despatched from Rome on Friday stated that the Pope had strongly condemned the racial and nationalistic doctrines, asking: "Why should Italy feel the necessity for disgracefully imitating Germany?" Too many people forgot that human beings were of one universal race, he continued. "Catholicism means universality, not doctrines of race and nationalism."
