STIFLING INITIATIVE

BURDEN OF TAXATION STATE RESTRICTIONS The opinion that taxation, which was being continued at a level s;tifling to iniative, would be apt to lau the goose that laid the golden egg, was expressed by the secretary of the Auckland Chamber of Commerce, Dr. E P. Neale, speaking at the annual meeting of the Taranaki Chamber of Commerce. The position was aggravated by the excessive rise in production costs. . Dr Neale said the recent rise in imports showed the difficulties that most New Zealand manufacturers were experiencing. It was significant that the Government Statisticians index number on New Zealand share prices had fallen from 1009 to 919 in the past 12 months, and was now 8 per cent below the level of 192 G. The number of Government restrictions to-day was also criticised by Dr. Neale. Restraints, he maintained, should be only on evils, and should not frustrate initiative. Some of the restrictions on industry seemed to be definitely harmful.
