Iceland poppies were tastefully arranged for the adornment of the rooms in which the guests were entertained.

Miss W. Whitelaw, England, who has been visiting her sister, Mrs. S. J. Plummer, Tokomaru Bay, left Gisborne this morning for Auckland, and will shortly embark on her return to England. Miss Whitelaw was formerly principal of the well-known English girls' school, Wycombe Abbey, and is now engaged in social welfare work.

Mrs. A. Macandrew, of Titirangi, Auckland, and her husband have left for Dunedin. where they will take part in the seventy-fifth anniversary celebration of the Dunedin Choral Society, of which Mrs. Macandrew was accompanist for many years. She is a daughter of one of its first conductors, tiro late Mr. George R. West.

Mrs. F. Mangan, Toronto, Canada, has arrived in Auckland after an extended visit to New South Wales, where she was the guest of her nephew, Sir Earle Page and Lady Page. Mrs. Mangan will spend some weeks with her nephew, Captain E. Cox, and Mrs. Cox, Duders avenue, Devonport, and will sail on September 0 by the Aorangi for Canada.

A wedding of interest was celebrated at St. Mark's Church. Remuera, Auckland, on Saturday evening, when Miss Beryl Christian, second daughter of Mr. and Mrs. G. N. Christian, Takapuna, was married to Dr. Macky Ilereus, eldest son of the Rev. 11. G. Hercus and Mrs. Hercus, of Sydney. The Rev. P. Houghton officiated.

New President of Women's Institutes At the Dominion conference of the New Zealand Federation of Women's Institutes held in Wellington last week, Miss Amy Kane, of Wellington, was elected president for

the coming year. Miss Kane has taken an active part in public work and for several years has been connected with the institute movement. When visiting England and the Continent about two years ago, Miss Kane attended a conference of the English Institutes and also an international women's conference in Istanbul. Miss Kane is a member of the Wellington branch of the National Council of Women, and the executive of the British Drama League. She is also a member of the Wellington Hospital Board, and is associated with a number of other public organisations. Jolly Cabaret Dance As a finale to the race meeting on Saturday, u very enjoyable and jolly cabaret was held in Le Grand Cafe in the evening. The music was provided by Stuart Skeet's orchestra, and by Messrs. 0. Low and M. Pomare, who played extras. The ballroom was well filled with dancers ancTpresented an attractive scene, the tracking being particularly attractive, some lovely gowns being noticed. A delicious savoury supper was served in the refreshment room, the tables being prettily decorated with jonquils. Among those present were Mrs. D. C. S. Hain, wearing sky blue with a •blue coat to match brocaded in pink and silver; Mrs. H. M. B. deLautour (Wairoa), black velvet; Mrs. E. Barker, a frock of white floral chiffon printed in black and cherry tonings, with a satin coat to match; Mrs. H. E. Harris, dark green cloque; Mrs. W. I. Bruce, green printed crepe; Mrs. O. T. Williams (Ruatoria), floral Liberty silk in white, green and flame, with a green velvet coatee; Mrs. P. A. Pettit, black floral silk. Miss M. Spicer (England) chose pale blue taffeta combined with frilled blue net to match; 'Miss J. Perry, black primrose chiffon: Miss E. Hegarty, a charming frock of silver satin tinged ■with pale blue; Miss J. Strouts (Wanganui), black trimmed with silver beads and a red sash: Miss M. Miss S. Barton was daintily tracked in cerise chiffon; Miss Jan Williams, a redingote frock of hyacinth blue chiffon over sea-green taffeta; Miss E. Reeves (Tolaga Bay), maroon velvet; Miss M. Orr (Taupo), black, with a white coatee: Miss P. Barker, a lovely gown of azalea pink and gold brocade; Miss J. Williams, a pretty frock of cyclamen brocade; Miss B. Presentation Dinner Party The Poho-o-Rawiri Ladies' Social Committee and a few intimate friends tendered a farewell dinner and dance to Mr. David Jurie on the eve of his departure from Gisborne. Mrs. Tureia, on behalf of the committee and his many friends, presented the guest of honour with an engraved signet ring as a token of esteem and goodwill. The speakers were Mesdames Tureia and Rangiuia, Miss Gunn, Messrs. Kiwi. Maki, Tureia, H. Rangiuia, J. Taylor, S. Taylor, T. Dennis and T. Rangi, who all thanked Mr. Jurie for his services in connection with the orchestra and wished him well in his new sphere of business. Mr Jurie suitably replied. Musical items and dancing were enjoyed. Miss Tiia Smith gave an exhibition of tap dancing, Mihi Swann sang and tap-danced, Mr. Jurie played the piano-accordion, Mr. Dennis and the Misses Jones gave a vocal trio, and Mr. H. Rangiuia a vocal solo. Mrs. C. W. Smith furnished the dance music. Mr. Rangiuia was the M.C. A committee, comprising Mesdames Rangiuia, Kiwi, Taylor, Maki, Rangi, Rogers and Misses M. Gunn, M. Pohatu and B. Taylor, was responsible for the dinner arrangements.
