Jolly Dance at Wainui A very jolly dance was held in the Wainui Hall on Saturday night by the Gisborne Rowing Club, the organisation of the function being in the capable hands of the club's social committee. Mrs. Thomson's orchestra rendered the dance music, and an enjoyable extra was played by Miss Kura Beale (Waipiro Bay). Despite the inclement weather there was a good attendance, the dance being a cheery finale to the day's races. A dainty supper was served. Among those present were Mr. and Mrs. D. C. Ladies' Auxiliary The Ladies' Auxiliary of the Gisborne and East Coast Y.M.C.A. met at the Y.M.C.A. building, Fitzherberl street, on Thursday afternoon, Miss W. Lysnar presiding. Those present were Mesdames W. G. Alexander, L. W. Anderson, H. W. Buckley, J. Beckett. A. H. Collett, A. F. Excell, R. W. J. Edwards, P. Hockley, R. Johnston, H. J. Poole, A. E. Parkinson and F. T. Dunn was appointed hon. secretary and treasurer, owing to the resignation of Mrs. Freeman, the former holder of the oflice. One new member, Mrs. P. Hockley, was elected to the committee, and was warmly welcomed by members, who expressed appreciation of her help in preparing decorations for the Eastern Fair last year. The secretary was requested to write to Mesdames E. R. Beckett, J. McKee and F. E. Freeman thanking them for their valuable work in the past and advising them that the committee was pleased to have them as honorary members. It was reported that £ll 13s Id had been handed over to the directors, the sum being profits accrued from a recent jumble sale. Mesdames Parkinson, E. R. Beckett and L. W. Anderson, and Miss E. M. Dunn were appointed to dispense tea to the helpers on Red Triangle day. Plans for the Dutch Fair to be held on September £) and 10 are well in hand and every effort is being made to make it even more attractive than the successful Eastern Fair of last year. The next meeting will be held on Thursday, August 18. Warm Clothing Chosen For the Races at Makaraka The bitterly cold weather and cloudy sky on Saturday induced racegoers to wear their warmest clothes and to prepare for rain, and the muddy state of the ground made rubber footwear in the shape of gumboots and goloshes the popular fashion of the day. Fortunately, the day remained fine, and, despite the wet and slippery conditions underfoot, a very cheerful atmosphere prevailed at the Poverty Bay Turf Club's meeting at the Makaraka course, this being enhanced by music by the W.E.C.M.R. Band. Tailored tweeds with knitted woollen jumpers, furs or warm scarves were the order of the day, people choosing their apparel for comfort rather than smartness, although the various new soft colourings in tweeds and the ever popular becoming shades of brown were attractive. Enjoyable Annual Catholic Ball]

The City Hall was the scene of a very enjoyable dance last night, the occasion being the annual Catholic Ball. This year the function was organised by three committees sponsoring candidates for the Catholic queen carnival, representing Tc Hapara, Whataupoko and City districts respectively. The committee in charge of the supper comprised Mcsdames W. Neal, M. Keany, Lannigan and Rigney, and Miss J. Wheeler, for Whataupoko; Mcsdames. McCarthy, Small, Hoggins end A. Scholium, for Te Hapara; and Mesdames Nicholl, Chambers, Gardner, Sexton, McDonald, Martin, Shone, and Perston, and Miss M. Paterson, for City. Mrs. Winnie Thomson's orchestra provided the dance music, the programme including old-time as well as modern dances. A "Bon Voyage" Party A most delightful . r > o'clock party was given by Mr. and Mrs. H. B. Williams, Turihaua station, on Saturday for their daughter, Miss Jan Williams, lo give her an opportunity of bidding farewell to her friends before leaving for England to enter Cambridge University. Owing to the bad weather and the slip on the road leading to Turihaua, the host and hostess held the party in the large reception lounge at Messrs. Pelties' premises instead of at their own home as originally intended. The room proved an ideal setting for a large social gathering, and looked very attractive with a carpeted floor. bright electric lights, bowls of mauve and purple irises, arum lilies and beautiful Iceland poppies artistically arranged. Small tables bearing plates of delicious savouries were placed about the room, the central table looking attractive with a huge orange-coloured pumpkin spiked in porcupine fashion with wooden needles holding small savouries in a variety of flavourings and colourings, the effect being novel and artistic. Some of the other tables were similarly decorated but on a smaller scale, grape-fruit serving the same purpose as the pumpkin. Good wishes for an enjoyable voyage and a happy and successful career were extended lo Miss Williams who looked charming in a light grey tailored suit finished with a cherry silk scarf. The party was very jolly and was thoroughly enjoyed by all the guests.

• Mrs. Williams welcomed the guests wearing a smart French model frock of black knop-wool silk finished cloque, adorned with a corsage spray of real red geraniums, and worn with silver fox furs. The • hostess was assisted by her sister, Miss E. Myhill, who wore a becoming frock of tine wool kasha in a soil shade of vieux-rose.

Farewell Mah-jong Party Yesterday afternoon Mrs. J. Blair gave a delightful party in honour of Mrs. H. B. Williams, who leaves early next week for England. The guests played mah-jong in the drawing-room, which was prettily decorated with Iceland poppies and jonquils, and warmed by a cheery fire. An adjournment was made for tea, which was daintily served in the din-ing-room from a table effectively adorned with a bowl of violets, japonica and other flowers to tone. The guests included Mcsdames W. R. B. Willock, E. Ewart Brown, C. C. Dowding, R. L. Maclean, F. Kahlenberg, S. D. Nathan, M. Holden, L. Miles, W. A. Bowie, J. R. Murphy, G. M. Reynolds, J. A. Maeleod, and F. Wrey Nolan; Misses 11. Thomson and R. Barry. Children's Party On Saturday afternoon Mrs. Goodyear gave a jolly children's party at her home in Stout street in celebration of the seventh birthday of her daughter Margaret. Games and community singing were enjoyed by the children, who did full justice to the delicious party tea prepared for them and appreciated the gaily coloured balloons, squeakers and novel paper hats which they received at tea-time. Pride of place on the teatable was given to the attractive birthday cake surmounted by seven candles, which was cut by the guest of honour. Mrs. Goodyear received her guests wearing a becoming green woollen frock. Miss Margaret Goodyear wore a pretty cherry red jumper suit. Her aunt, Mrs. Whitby, East Coast, assisted in entertaining the guests. The children present were Misses Judy Oakden, Eileen Taylor, Ruth Johns, D. Simpson and M. East; Masters R. Taylor, Richard Oakden, i Peter Goodyear and John Sellman.

Three railwayman, of whom two were signalmen, were recently sentenced to death by shooting at Samtredi, near Tillis. Georgia, on charges of having caused a collision. The stationmaster and an assistant enginedriver were sentenced to five years' imprisonment each, and a watchman was sentenced to three years' imprisonment.
