STOLE FATHER'S SKINS
YOUTH CONVICTED
CONSTABLE'S VIGILANCE

Had it not been for the alertness of a constable at Ashburton Arthur Alexander Hewson, a farm labourer, aged 22 may have succeeded in stealing skins valued at £lO from his father. However,, the constable's suspicions were aroused when he noticed Hewson driving a rental car tilled with skins. This morning Hewson appeared in the Magistrate's Court before Mr. E. C. Lcvvey, S.M. Hewson pleaded guilty and was convicted and ordered to be sent to the Waikcria prison camp for three years. Delective-Sergeant Holmes said that at the time the theft was committed, Hewson was on probation and was working at Cust. About July 25, he came to Christchurch, hired a rental car and went to Gcraldine, where he stole the goods from his father's store-. "When lie was coming through Ashburton, a constable became suspicious about the skins in the car." continued Detective-Sergeant Holmes. "The constable questioned Hewson. The replies were not satisfactory and subsequent inquiries revealed the theft."
