MOTORISTS AND CYCLISTS

VARIETY OF CHARGES

A variety of charges against motorists and cyclists was heard this morning before Mr. E. L. Walton, S.M., in the Magistrate's Court.

In the following cases Senior-ser-geant J. iF. H. Macnamara prosecuted:—

Ernest 'Stevens and Eileen Hegarty were each fined 10s and costs 10s f6r operating vehicles without warrants of fitness.

Robert Henry Thomson and Ernest Frederick Esquilant were each fined 5s and costs 10s for riding cycles without lights after the hours of darkness.

The Borough Council's traffic inspector, Mr. T. G. Nowell, conducted the following cases: — Johnny Tima was fined 10s and costs 17s for having no warrant of fitness.

David A- Smellie was fined £2 and costs 10s for exceeding the speed limit in Wainui road on July 15. His speed was checked at 40 m.p.h.

Edward Fitzgerald was fined £1 and costs 10s for travelling at a speed of 40 m.p.h. in upper Gladstone road on July 11. Visibility was poor at the time.

Percy Boland was fined £1 and costs 10s for exceeding the speed limit in de Lautour road on July 19. Mr. Nowell said he cheeked the defendant's speed at 40 m.p.h. Mr. L. T. Burnard said that the defendant had been driving a car for the past 15 years and had not previously been in trouble.
