ROAD ACCIDENTS

EXPERIENCE IN GISBORNE LAST YEAR'S FIGURES COST OF CARELESSNESS (Sp«oliil to th« Horuld.) WELLINGTON, this day. Sixty persons were injured in road accidents in Gisborne during the year ended March 31 last, six of these being injured seriously. Accidents in Gisborne were more frequent, though generally less serious, than in boroughs with a similar population during the 12 months. Napier for instance, with a slightly larger population, had 29 persons injured, although three of these were fatal. Hastings, with a slightly smaller population, had 41 injured, 10 seriously, and one fatally. The Hamilton Borough had the same number injured but 18 were seriously injured compared with six in Gisborne, and there were also two killed in the Hamilton district. A feature of the Gisborne eccidents was the number of bicyclists injured, a total of 2?. This was easily the highest proportion of the boroughs of over 6000. Fifteen motor-cyclists were injured, many seriously, durmg the period. This was also a high percentage. Chief Cause Carelessness I Carelessness in some form was responsible for practically every one of GisborneV accidents. A motor-cyclist was seriously injured when illegally overtaking another motor-cyclist. A bicyclist riding without brake or bell collided with a motorist who omitted to signal before pulling out from the kerb. An unlicensed and inexperienced motor-cyclist collided with a taxi. An intoxicated truck driver collided and seriously injured a motorcyclist. A taxi, while overtaking a cvclist on the wrong side, collided with the cyclist and injured him. Four persons were injured when a motor-cyclist collided with two bicyclists. A "motor-cyclist skidded and the pillion-rider was loft behind. An intoxicated pedestrian was knocked down by a taxi. Two persons were injured when a car struck a cyclist and then a bus. Two persons were injured, on* 1 seriously, when a car collided with a buggy and then struck a Three bicyclists were riding abreast whPn the outside rider was struck bv a motor-cyclist. Taxis were involved in seven accidents causing personal injury Accidents in which those concerned escaped injury are not included in these figures.
