UNUSUAL COMPETITION

POVERTY BAY GOLF CLUB

TWO-CARD HOOEY MATCH

CASUAL WATER ON LINKS

Although there was a quantity of water on the Awapuni links during the week-end, members of the Poverty Bay Golf Club were able to take part in a two-card bogey match under good playing conditions. The match was an unusual one, those with handicaps of 14 and under being paired with those with 15 and Over. There was no rain on Saturday, but conditions as regards the weather were not as favourable later in the week-end.

The winning pair, .1. C. O. Hill (13) and N. Balfour (16), returned .good cards, the former being 5 down and the latter 1 up, making the combined score for the pair 4 down. The best ot the others were:—C. H. Wells (G), 3 down, and J. L. Broad (24), 7 down, 10 down: B. R. Adair (22), C down, and M. W. Howe (12), 5 down, 11 down; K. A. Woodward (20), 7 down, and M. R. Maude <6>, 4 down, 11 down; G. A. Nicholls (24). 5 down, and M. Brownlie (8), 7 down, 12 down; D. B. Barry (3), 6 down, and V. S. Caulton (24), fi down, 12 down; T. .1. Corkery (8), 4 down, and J. T. Skeet (18), 9 down, 13 down.

In the town v. country match during the week-end some of the players failed to attend and the series was played by 12-a-side. In the singles the town players won eight games, halved three, and lost one. By winning the series the town players annexed the cup presented by Mr. J. Barns-Graham.

Next Saturday the players will play the qualifying round of the handicap tournament and on the following Saturday it is expected that 25 players from the club will visit Opotiki for a friendly series of matches.

Owing to the swampy conditions on the Park and Tuoi links the members of the Gisborne Park and Turanganui golf clubs were unable to use their courses during the weekend. It is thought at a week of fine weather will be necessary before the surface has hardened sufficiently.
