INDIAN HOCKEY TEAM

PLAYS WAIROA TO-MORROW

GISBORNE GAME THURSDAY

MUCH INTEREST AROUSED

The Manavadar Indian State hockey team, which defeated New Zealand in the second test on Saturday, was expected to arrive in Wairoa to-day in preparation for a match there to-mor-row.

On Wednesday the visitors will come to Gisborne, and after a civic and Maori reception at Poho-o-Rawiri in the morning, will play Poverty Bay in the afternoon.

Great interest is being taken in the visit, particularly by the 3000 to 4000 people who saw the 1935 team in action iu Gisborne, when the visitors won by 11 goals to nil after the fastest game of hockey ever seen here. The spectators were on their toes when Poverty Bay held India without score for the first 10 minutes and kept the visitors out for a further 10 minutes before the second goal was registered. In Wairoa the 1935 game was won by 18 goals to one, this score by the local side being the first against the visitors during the tour. The goal was scored by Prior, who also had the honour of scoring the first goal against the Indian Army team in 1926 when he was playing for Taranaki. There are three members of the present Indian team who were in New Zealand with the 1935 team. They are S. M. Hussain, captain and fullback. Shahabuddin, right wing, and P. P. Femandes, left wing. The lastmentioned will be remembered by the crowd for discarding his shoes at the interval and playing the remainder of the game in his bare feet. He scored two of the goals for his side. Hussain played in Gisborne in 1935, but Shahribuddin was on the sideline that day.
