TALKS AT PRAGUE
RUNCIMAN’S MISSION ENTIRELY INDEPENDENT LONDON, July 27. It is stated that Viscount Runciman, who has been requested by the Government of Czechoslovakia to go to Prague to mediate in the dispute between the Sudeten Germans and the Czech administration, will submit definite proposals to the Czech Prime Minister, Dr. Hodza, and the leader of the Sudeten Germans, Herr Henlein, to assist in a settlement, but these will be his own responsibility and will be independent of the British Government. Lord Runciman will go to Prague on Monday next, strictly as a private individual. A message from Berlin states that the German press attacks the Czech nationality statute, which is adding fresh tension to the previously calmer atmosphere. The German press is insinuating that Prague has already begun to sabotage Lord Runciman. Herr Hitler’s aide de camp, Captain Wiedemann, is expected to return to London during the week-end to confer with the Prime Minister, Mr. Neville Chamberlain. It is believed that Captain Wiedeman’s return follows Mr. Chamberlain’s hint of Britain’s readiness again to discuss Anglo-German rapprochement if the Czechoslovakian problem is satisfactorily settled.
