The quality of the beef shipped is not yet up to the standard that it is possible to attain, nevertheless the steady reduction in the number of rough old bullocks is undoubtedly improving the position. “The institution by the board of a stricter system of grading, combined with the increased supply of younger cattle, no doubt will increase the popularity of our chilled beef on the English market. Special Vans “It is very pleasing to stale that the New Zealand Railway Department is doing everything possible to meet this trade by increasing the special chilled beef vans necessary, and it is now practicable to carry chilled Beef by rail from as far as Wairoa to Wellington in the modern chilled beef wagons. “It is most necessary in this .highlyspecialised trade that we have no weak links in the chain between the producer in New Zealand and the consumer in Great Britain, and it is therefore essential that no delays occur in loading on the New Zealand waterfronts. “The transit of beef between New Zealand and London is still not altogether satisfactory, many of the vessels taking too long from the time the beef is loaded until discharged in the United Kingdom. “Our chilled beef on the whole is now attaining a reputation, particularly on account of its eating qualities.
