EX-SERVICEMEN CONFER

FLOURISHING BODY

LORD GALWAY.'S ADDRESS

{Per Pruss Association.) WELLINGTON, this day

The annual conference of the New Zealand Returned Soldiers' Association was opened to-day by the GovernorGeneral, Lord Galway. He said it was pleasant to know the association was nourishing, and was continuing to make a link between all those who had served their country in time of stress.

Every year, he said, delegates were a year older, but the memories of their great comradeship continued to ilourish. The conference discussions would further cement the link binding soldiers together. They had his hearty good wishes for the success of the conference.

The Mayor, Mr. T. C. A. Hislop, extended a welcome to the delegates. He made reference to the significance oi the recent Aazac gathering at Sydney. Hew Zealand, he said, was looking forward to the centennial in 1940, and an opportunity of meeting Australians. He hoped the present conference would further the work done on behalf of returned soldiers. The Minister of Defence, the Hon. F Jones, spoke personally and on behalf of the Government, and indicated that the Government would do its part when the Australian visit took place in 1940. At the request of the president, the Hon. W. Perry, the visitors were given three cheers. A wreath was laid this morning on the Citizens' War Memorial with appropriate ceremony.
