EIGHTY-THIRD BIRTHDAY
COL. SMITH HONOURED OTAGO REGIMENT OFFICERS (Per Prosß Association.) DUNEDIN, this day. A unique compliment was paid to Colonel E. R. Smith this morning when upon the attainment ol his eighty-third birthday, officers of the Otago Regiment, his former command and members of the trumpet and bugle band paraded in front of his residence sounding “reveille” and the “general salute,” after which the colonel entertained them. He has had 55 years volunteer service. He volunteered for service in both the Boer and Great Wars, but on both occasions was retained for home duty. As a rifle shot Colonel Smith won the New Zealand championship in 1894. It is recorded that when 78 years of age, competing at the Trentham meeting, he scored six successive bulls in 10 shots at 1000 yards. Colonel Smith has been chairman of the Dunedin Stock Exchange for several terms.
