Payment has been made to the Tauranga Hospital Board of a T 270 legacy bequeathed 1o the board by the late Mi'. Donald Grant, who lor many years was a member of the board and other local bodies.
Proof that the Gisborne instructors did their work well during last season’s national learn-to-swim week is borne out in the totals that have been announced by the National Committee of Swimming and Life-Saving. In all, 12,907 children and adults were certified to have a practical knowledge of swimming as a result of the week's tuition, and the result was obtained in the following districts:— Auckland, 5000; Gisborne, .'120; Hawke's Bay, 500: Wa'ikato, 521; Taranaki, 1441; Manawatu, 102; Wellington, 971; Nelson and Marlborough, •171; North Canterbury, 100; South Canterbury, 224; Ashburton, 500; West Coast, South Island, Kifi; Otago, 2249; Southland, 200. The need for continuing the campaign is given in the following figures: Total number of children in schools, Standard II and above, 5277; able to swim, 2702; unable to swim, 1515; total number ol children in 17 schools, 1128; able lo swim, 212; unable to swim, 015.
