REMITS DISCUSSED GRADING SYSTEMS The monthly meeting of the Poverty Bay branch of the New Zealand Educational Institute was held in the Gisborne Central School on Friday evening. Mr. A. E. 11. Parkinson, the president, took the opportunity of . welcoming Mr. C. G. Rigby, headmaster of the Awapuni School, to the executive. Mr. Rigby had been elected to fill the vacancv caused by the departure recently of Mr. W. H. Jones. The secretary, Mr. E. G. Caigou, reported that the roll number of the branch was 85 and 11 junior members, a total of 96. Discussion *of two remits—that Grade 2A women assistantships be reinstated—and that concern was felt at fhe small pension, £3l, allowable lo widows of teachers and that in any new scheme this pension be considered —occupied the early portion of the evening. The remainder of the discussion centred around a report which outlined arguments for and against both group and numerical grading of teachers. Many of the arguments were rejected and the discussion became lively on many points.
