FIRE IN TUNNEL
FIGHTERS BELOV/ RIVER PERILOUS TASK FACED NEW YORK. June 27. Firemen are having a stern fight with a fire that is raging in a tunnel that is being built 150 ft. below the Fast River. The tunnel was reported to be in danger of collapsing when the flames burned the wooden shoring. Handicapped by the terrific pressure and lack of ventilation, the firemen had to wear gas masks before they could enter the tunnel through a compression tank, in an effort 'to extkiguish the blaze with chemicals. Aitempts to quell the flames by reducing the air pressure and allowing the river to pour in were abandoned as being fro hazardous.
