HERD TESTING

THE ANNUAL RETURNS GISBORNE AND COAST HIGHEST HEED 386L8. LOWER. SEASON'S AVERAGE

In the Poverty Bay Group Herd Testing Association's annual returns, the average production of 6390 cows tested is shown as 2361 b, compared with 2431 b for the previous season.

The highest herd was that of Mr. P. Robertson, Taruheru, whose 13 cows averaged 3861 b of butterfat in 293 days, the average test being 5.2 and the milk 73241 b.

A seven-year Jersey cross belonging to Mr. George White, Ngatapa, was the highest cow in the association with a total of 5661 b of fat in 285 days. The milk production was 10,4401 b, and the average test 5.4. During the season, 149 herds were tested in eight groups. The total number of cows in milk 100 days or more was 6390, while C 712 were tested twice or more. Herds averaging 3001 b of butterfat or over totalled 27.

The above figures are taken from the annual returns supplied to-day by the secretary of the association, Mr M. Whitham, who in a review of the position stated that the season was a bad ,one generally, and some of the herds averaging over 3001 b in the past did not reach that figure during the season just closed. Also, the milking season was a very short one on the East Coast, where half the herds tested by the association were located, while an additional group on the Coast this year supplied new untested herds.
