THE GRAIN RACE

THIRD BARQUE HOME PASSAT STILL LEADS LONDON, June 17. The Finnish four-master barque, Viking, one of Captain Erikson's fleet, reached London yesterday, 123 days out from Port Victoria, with a cargo of South Australian wheat for the United Kingdom. Even after allowing for the extra distance involved in going on to London, instead of putting in at Falmouth, her passage was not fast.

The Viking is the third competitor in this year's grain race to reach England. The first to arrive was the Swedish vessel Abraham Rydberg, which reached London on May 17. The Passat (Finland), co-winner oj" last year's race was next to arrive, checking in at Falmouth on June 9, after a splendid passage. The passages to date are: Passat, 97 days; Abraham Rydberg, 121 days; Viking, 123 days. Last year's winning time was 94 days, by the Passat and Pommern. The Pommern, which left Port Germein 22 days after the Passat, will have to reach port before the end of June to beat her great rival of last year. With the exception of the Penang, which is at Dunedin, New Zealand, undergoing repairs after being almost dismasted in a South Pacificgale, none of the other windjammers have been reported since leaving South Australian grain-loading ports. They are: Killoran, Finnish threemasted barque deft Port Victoria January 30, 138 days out); Admiral Karpfanger, German auxiliary-en-ained four-masted barque, formerly L'Avenir (left Port Germein February 8. 129 days out); Winterhude, Finnish three masted barque • (left Port Germein March 5, 104 days out); Pommern, Finnish four-masted barque (left Port Germein March 20, 03 days out); Windhill, Finnish three, masted barque (left Port Victoria April 0, 69 days out); Mashulu, Finnish four-masted barque (left Port Victoria April 24, 54 days out); Olivebank, Finnish four-masted barque (left Port Victoria May 10, 38 days out); Archibald Russell, Finnish four-masted barque left Port Germein May 10, 38 days out.
