PETROL REMOVED
AIRWOMAN’S PLIGHT
RAN SHORT IN ATR
TOWNSVILLE, June 10.
When Miss Barbara Hitchins. the young Sydney airwoman, arrived at Townsville this morning on her return flight from New Guinea, she stated that a quantity of petrol had been drained out of the front tank of her machine by some unauthorised person at Cooktown.
Only a reserve of four or five gallons in the rear tank enabled her to reach Townsville without mishap. Miss Hitchins said that both tanks had been filled at Cooktown and the machine had then been tied down for the night.
The front tank failed when she was over Ingham. She had left Cooktown with only 19 gallons, and the small surplus in the rear tank, instead of 30 gallons.
She suffered much pain during her flight from New Guinea from an injured hand. The hand was treated at the Cooktown Hospital.
