A nine-storey building is to be erected on Lambton quay, Wellington, for insurance interests.

In order to increase the output of wagons by 1200 a year, the staff of the East Town railway workshops, Wanganui, is to be increased (o 200 men.

Regarding the application of the Vacuum Oil Company, Limited, for permission to erect a fuel oil tank on Gisborne Harbour Board’s property ir connection with the exploration of petroleum possibilities in the Poverty Bay district, the works committee of he board to-day presented a report favouring the application. The committee’s recommendation was that the company be permitted to erect a tank of 10.000 gallons capacity adjacent to that recently constructed for the board’s own use, and that an extension of the board’s inlet pipe be permitted for pumping bulk supplies from the ship’s side at the wharf. The remains of a badly damaged -ar of the baby type on the side of Wainui road were noticed yesterday by- the many- motorists travelling on the Coast road and there were many conjectures as to the possible fate of the occupants. The accident occurred at about 11.15 p.m. on Saturday and four young people were fortunate to escape without a scratch. When 300yds. on the Wamui side of the Sponge Bay turn-off the car developed a wobble and capsized, -the body’ being torn from the chassis. As far as can be ascertained, the vehicle belonged to Mr. Stulbbings, Patutahi. and he had loaned it to a friend.

Work on. the erection of boundary fences on Esk Valley properties is nowprogressing steadily, and favoui e-d by good weather it is expected that the job will be completed shortly. Arrangements for the transport of fencing materials io the valley are being carried out by the Department of Agriculture. First attention is being given to the resurveyed boundaries, and when this job is completed the benefit will be felt insofar as stock will be held back from the resown areas. It is proposed, once the boundary fences have been completed, to proceed with sub-divisions for farmers who were granted assistance in the re-erection of their fencing by the Cabinet.

The latest development in the history of the play is its remarkable reception in Paris, where an adaptation by M Georges dc Warfaz was produced recently at the Theatre des Arts Leading Paris newspapers were enthusiastic in acclaiming the quality of the story, and the distinction with which the plot had been developed. Its author. Dr. Merton Hodge, is a former Gisborncite who displayed his playwright talent first while a student at Edinburgh University. He has indicated that he intends to continue in his profession, despite hi.s success with this and other plays.
