AMATEUR MATMEN

SATURDAY’S PROGRAMME

SMALE BEATSGEDDES

BURTON-BUSCKE DRAW The amateur preliminaries staged by •the Gisborne Wrestling Association on Saturday night in the Opera House, as curtain-raisers for the Raines-Ken-nedy contest, lacked the sparkle of corresponding bills seen earlier in the season. Only two of the five bouts were really good, inexperience on the part of one or both contestants spoiling the others.

Making his second public appearance, A. Third, 11.4, met a more experienced opponent in K. Pere, 11.10, and essayed a spectacular opening with a hand-spring, which the Maori evaded easily enough. Third seemed to be in trouble early in the round, after having been rolled about a bit, but he saw the round out well. Pere was- attacking all through the second round, and again in the third had a good mar-

gin, getting the verdict on points,

More lively and a great deal more skilful was the contest between N. Summersby, 10.10. and S. .McLauchlan, 10.4, in which a lot of fast work prefaced the first real hold, a keylock •applied by McLauchlan and held until the referee broke it. The rest of the round was even, and in. the succeeding two rounds SummerSby was working hard on an elusive opponent. The decision went to Summersby, probably on account of his aggressive showing. _ Hard Calchweight Tussle i ,Substituting for A. Read, owing to

the latter having been injured at football. G. Geddes met M. Smale at ca'tchweigh'ts, and ran into trouble in the first half-minute, when Smale converted a leg-lock into an Indian deathlock. The referee broke the hold quickly, but Geddes took the incident hard, and went for Iris opponent strongly, headlocking him repeatedly and | then getting on a deathlock. Smale I warmed up quickly, too, and in his j turn tossed Geddes round, the latter showing the effects of the pace at the bell.

. Stmale put on a short-arm scissors twice in the second round, ‘but his opponent worked out each time, and took a fair share of the leading in a vigorous session. Opening the third round, Smale got the upper hand with a couple of headlocks, and finished his opponent oil , with an aeroplane spin and a dump. | Eccentric Ring Manners j The crowd derived a lot of fun from a substitute bout between “Texas” Thompson, a Maori of eccentric ring manners, and J. Gambrazzi, a European. of the same weight, 11.6, who knew no more than the Maori about the finer points of the game. Thompson was too strong for his opponent, who, however, was able to evade being pinned. The Maori got the decision. Real quality was represented in the last of the amateur preliminaries, between E. Burton, 10.3, and I. Buscke. 10.0. Regular supporters recalled that j on a recent appearance Burton hurt { his leg, and after a brisk first round i last night he seemed to be saving it a

| bit. He and Buscke were on even terms most, of the way, with Burton coming nearer to scoring a fall than ever his opponent did in the first and second rounds.

He was obviously handicapped by his bad leg in the third round, but Buscke was careful to exert no leverage on that limb, and the contest, easily the best of the amateur bouts, ended in a popular draw.

Mr. K. Buscke refereed all the amateur bouts, with the exception of that in which his brother was engaged. This and also the professional match between Raines and Kennedy were handled by Mr. T. Smale.
