Racing Car Speeds
TN the recent Cork Grand Prix, at 1 which several cars designed under the new formula (3 litres supercharged, 41 litres unsupercharged) appeared, the organisers took the trouble to time some of the cars over a measured straight kilometre to discover whether speeds had been greatly reduced, as hoped, by the new 'formula.
A Bugatti, driven by Wimille, covered this section at 147 m.p.h., and a Delahaye at 145 m.p.h., while, in the small car race, “Bira’s” E.R.A., of 1,500 c.c., ran over the section at 138.7 m.p.h. These seem to indicate that race organisers overseas will soon be faced with the same old problem, as it has been proved that possible mixirnum speeds increase rapidly after the designers have had a little experience with a new formula. The Cork Grand Prix wa s won by Rene Dreyfus in the Delayahe, and “Bira” won the small car race with the E.R.A., afterwards finishing second behind Dreyfus in the Grand Prix at the wheel of a Maserati.
