COLONY IN ANTARCTIC
WEATHER AND FUR FARM SIR. D. MAWSON’S PLAN CANBERRA, June 12. Sir Douglas Mawson, the Australian explorer, suggests in a report to the Commonwealth Government that a meteorological station should be established on Macquarie Island, in the Antarctic, as part of the seasonal forecasting service announced last week by the Minister for the Interior, Mr. J. McEwen.
He thinks that, to help defray the cost, it might be possible to establish a sea elephant industry and a fur fox farm in the Antarctic. The hides of sea elephants are valuable for the production of special leathers. Other experts express doubt whether Polar weather data is of any value in forecasting Australian weather.
